Hi folks,

IPhone 3GS
KVM
Debian 5.0 - host
Ubuntu 9.04 - VMs

After connecting the USB cord to the Virtual Machine IPhone can be detected. Photos and Video on the IPhone can be download to the PC, the host.

But I can't find the mount point of the IPhone either on /mnt or /media. "fdisk -l" can find it as well.

I'm now following following thread to sync IPhone to PC;
How to connect iPhone/iPod Touch (Using USB) in Karmic/Jaunty/Intrepid/Hardy
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-con...epidhardy.html

Unfortunately I don't have a spare PC for this testing. Therefore I install iFuse on a VM of the Virtual Machine. The installation is completed, no problem encountered. However after connection via the USB cord IPhone can be detected by the host. Photos and Video on the IPhone can be download to the host without problem. But IPhone can't be detected by the VM. Neither can I find the mountpoint of the IPhone on the host. I'm still struggling to sort out this problem. Where is the mountpoint. If without result I have to find a spare PC for this test.

Please advise. TIA

When I try mplayer with different distros, I get different results. Right now I have Kubuntu Karmic on the hard drive, but most of the time I'm running Kiara , which is a rebuild of Slax, from a live CD. With Slax, and (I believe) also with Slackware, Mplayer doesn't seem to support playing flv (flash video), or, strange to say, ogg. Now, with Karmic, I can't get full-screen video, though I can get that with most Debian-based distros, including the earlier kubuntu jaunty. Any way of closing up these gaps?

Hello all,

While I have been using Linux for many years (Slackware), I have found myself facing a special need that I can't quite figure out.

I work at a club where I use iMovie on my Mac to create a DVD that plays on all of our TV's displaying our upcoming lineup of bands.

In order to save on DVD's, I would like to create a very small form factor PC running Linux with the following requirements: the computer must boot into Linux and log itself in, the computer will boot up with a thumb drive attached containing a movie file of the most Linux compatible video format. After booting up and logging itself in, the video on the thumb drive must start playing automatically in full screen mode and in a continuos loop.

So the whole thing needs to be automated from boot to playing movie; only the power button should ever need to be touched.

Any input on how to script\configure this would be much appreciated.

Until now:
I open Network and see my Linux computer-good
Select the Linux maschine and see a folder Printers -good
Select the printer folder and I get a long slow wait trying to find it, then freeze with a "not responding" notice. Not so good.
The Vista maschine will print if I plug the printer into it physically, I have the correct software.

So, somewhere in the Printer configuration on Kubuntu is a problem?
Or should I use the CUPS driver on both maschines?
Or is it not possible anyway?

All ideas are welcome.

Please get yor brains together folks, this is weird & I really need help here!
Problem: Often when I use mouse-wheel/third-button/alt+right button screen hangs completely. Tried with different mice, also used these mice on other computers w/o problem so it's not a faulty mouse.

More details:
Just installed Debian Lenny/stable - since I want a stable system...
It hangs on three things (not always, very randomly!):
* Firefox - using mousewheel, sometimes middleclick-ing (wheel & middle are the same button on all my mice)
* OpenOffice - Pretty often! Not tied to any special mouse usage, but when it happens I was always using mouse..
* Kate - seldom (rarely use mouse there..), happened twice when resizing window w alt+right mouse-button.

What happens is:
The mouse cursor "stutters" across the screen but absolutely nothing can be done - no reaction from menus or running apps, "eyes" in the panel are not moving. Keyboard is also completely locked - caps/numlock leds dont change, cant switch to terminal, can't kill X w ctrl-alt-bspace...

Logging in via ssh I can see that the system is running, "Xorg" uses 100% or more (!) of cpu.
X cannot be killed. Switching runlevel to 2 (which here is runlevel1 + networking) doesn't help.
There seems to be nothing I can do to get my GUI back in working order.
"MagicSysRQ" works however, although the "power-off" doesn't power off completely: I hear the disks "go to sleep" but pwr-fan is running - and my screen still shows my frozen kde desktop!

There is nothing in any log about what's happening, not the tiniest clue.
I have left the system on for some 30 minutes, no change.

Computer:
Asustek mb, AMD64, 2GB RAM, usbmouse + trackball, ps2-keyboard, built-in VGA "ATI Technologies Inc RS690 [Radeon X1200 Series]"
X.Org X Server 1.4.2 - unfortunately one without the xorg.conf so I can't say how it's configured. (Grrr I hate'em for doing that!)
Debian Lenny, kde3.5, RADEON driver (Can & will not try ATI:s drivers since they simply don't work (tried on Lenny, Mint 7, Mepis8, PCLinuxOS.))

Instead of asking what Linux distro is best (which just seems like handing out a loaded gun) I would like to know if anybody can recommend a good book on running Linux. I presently have "Running Linux", 4th edition by O'Reilly Publications. It's a bit of a handful, more a book for somebody who knows enough about command lines and how to enter them than an "I'm-a-survivor-of-the-Windows-War". I need something for the complete newbie. Any suggestions?

Hi guys. I'm back.

The question I'm about to post isn't centered on Linux alone. It is a general network problem I've been facing for the past few days.

I moved to a new university a couple of months back. The Computers & Networking department at the uni has set up two wireless APs in our wing. Both of them have separate ESSIDs, but the IP adresses appear to be getting dished out by some central server.

The problem is, on both Windows and Linux, I get "Limited or no connectivity" errors after about 10-15 minutes of connectivity. Changing the MAC address works, but you need to keep doing it over and over again (with a new MAC address each time.)

I'm guessing that somehow, the central server thinks everytime that I'm already connected (based on MAC-to-IP address pairings), and refuses to give out an IP address. As such, both Windows and Linux take on a link-local address, and play dumb. What I don't understand is why my connection is getting dropped consistently....

BTW, I have an Atheros AR5007EG wireless chip, and my drivers are currently at their latest versions.

Any ideas?

One more thing: last night, a friend of mine had brought his laptop into my room. We made this weird observation: everytime he'd switch on his wireless radio, I'd get a "Limited or no connectivity" error. The moment he'd switch off his radio, everything would work fine again.

Have tried other Linux forums and also the CUPS forum but noone seems to answer me.

The program tripwire suggest a reinstall in single user mode before you set up its database. So you can be sure there is nothing scary on the computer to start with.

I've tried doing this by a rather crude and direct method

Code:

Is there a sensible way to achieve this object? Thanks.

I want to be able to boot drive #2 from drive #1 grub menu at boot time. I have run “update-grub” and it probes and finds (sdb5) and creates a new grub.cfg called grub.cfg.new in the /boot folder, but the new cfg file does not show (sdb5) or (sdb) it shows all other changes that I made such as splash screens and they are working. How do I get it to recognize drive #2 with Ubuntu 9.10. I can boot each drive independently of one another and I can boot 9.04 with 9.10 if I swap the drives around. And run “update-grub” The auto probe is working in the Ubuntu 9.10 and may be working partly in the 9.04.

This may or may not be a problem, but is a pain anyway. When I run “update-grub” in 9.04's grub version 1.96, it does not change anything in the current “grub.cfg” it does make a new file called “grub.cfg.new” I have to go into /boot/grub and change “grub.cfg” to old and change “grub.cfg.new” to “grub.cfg” I do not have this problem running the same command in Ubuntu 9.10's grub. It finds changes and os's and automatically updates the current “grub.cfg”
any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey guys... I know I've done this before but I haven't had the need in awhile and it escapes me what I did.

Basically, I have a box with a ssh service with X11 Forward on. I can connect, initiate a process on the remote box, and see the program as if on the local one - all good.

What I would like to do, though, is say I fire up a process - lets say a cdburn from a gui and not a cli on the ssh service box. Then I go to a remote box and ssh into the one burning the cd. I'd like to pull what is being displayed on the remote box to the local box so that I can see the progress - without looking at text log files - I want the actual display.

This is just a simple example of more I want to do, so getting the actual display as an interactive display is critical. I seem to remember something about finding the process id and connecting to that, but again its been years and I forget.

The other option would be to forward the entire screen, sort of how windows does remote desktop, but I'd prefer on a process by process basis if possible.

Thanks a bunch~
